Water wells · Price guide 2026

A hand-pump water well in Pakistan costs between £150 and £300 in 2026, depending on who builds it, how deep it goes and what is included. A deeper well with taps costs £750 to £1,500, and a community borehole with a tank and solar pump runs from £1,200 to £5,000. Here is what the money actually pays for, and how to compare offers that do not describe the same thing.

In short

  • Hand-pump well (10 to 35 m): £150 to £300. Ours: £195, all included.
  • Well with pump, taps and seating: £750 to £1,500. Ours: £1,000.
  • Community borehole (80 m, tank, 12 to 16 taps): £1,200 to £5,000. Ours: from £1,210.
  • The price difference between builders comes from depth, pump quality, proof, maintenance, and margin.

What a hand-pump well costs in Pakistan in 2026

The most common well sold to Muslims in the UK, the US and Canada is the hand-pump well in rural Sindh or Punjab: a borehole of 10 to 35 metres fitted with a manual pump. In 2026 the UK charities price it between £150 and £300, with most around £150 to £200. US organisations charge $200 to $600 for the same object; on LaunchGood the average Pakistan hand-pump campaign is about $209.

Well & Trees builds it for £195 ($259, CA$367, A$371). The price includes the drilling, the pump, a plaque with the name you choose, the GPS coordinates, the photos and the video of the finished well, customer service in English, and our margin. There is nothing to add.

Where the £195 goes

People are right to ask what a well “really” costs. Here is the breakdown for our hand-pump well, in round figures.

  1. Materials, about 40 %. The pump head and cylinder, the rods, the PVC casing and screen, cement for the platform, and the plaque. Bought from local suppliers in Sindh, which keeps the money in the region and the parts easy to replace.
  2. Labour and drilling, about 25 %. A team of three to five people over two to four days, plus the drilling rig or manual drilling depending on the ground.
  3. Proof and follow-up, about 10 %. Someone has to go back to film the first water, photograph the plaque, record the GPS point, and come back if the pump needs a repair.
  4. Advertising, about 15 %. Most people find us through Google and Meta ads. This is the part a charity usually does not show you, because it is paid from “admin” or from other donations.
  5. Team and margin, about 10 %. The French team that coordinates, answers your emails, and the company’s margin. We are a company and we say so.

The About page shows the same breakdown as a chart.

What a photo does not show

Two wells can look identical in a photo and differ by twenty metres of depth, the quality of the pump cylinder, and whether anyone comes back to film the first water. The price difference is in what you cannot see.

Why some wells cost £150 and others £300

Five things explain most of the gap between offers that look identical.

  • Depth. A 10-metre borehole in an area with a high water table costs half of a 35-metre one. Some £150 offers are shallow wells that run low in the dry season.
  • Pump quality. A cast-iron hand pump with a brass cylinder lasts years; a lighter pump can fail within a year. Ask what brand and what guarantee.
  • Proof. A video, GPS coordinates and dated photos cost time. Offers that promise “a photo on request” are cheaper for a reason.
  • Delay. A builder with a queue of six to twelve months can quote lower because the money sits before the work. We build in about three months.
  • What is left out. Some prices exclude the plaque, the platform, or the trip to film. Read the fine print before comparing.
Hadith

“The best charity is giving water to drink.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 1681, from the narration of Sa’d ibn Ubadah, graded hasan by al-Albani. The same words are in Sunan Ibn Majah 3684, with a weaker chain.

The cheapest well is not always the best deed

A well is a sadaqah jariyah only for as long as it gives water. A £150 pump that breaks after a year and is never repaired gives one year of reward; a £195 pump that works for ten gives ten. When you compare prices, compare years of water, not pounds. The questions to ask any builder: how deep, which pump, who repairs it, and can I see the video. We explain how to read the answers in Is a water well sadaqah jariyah?

How much does a well cost in Africa?

African wells are a different object. Hand-dug wells with a bucket, like our classic well in Madagascar, cost £875 and serve a village of 500; they need a concrete lining and a team on site for weeks. Machine-drilled boreholes in East or West Africa cost $2,500 to $5,000 and are usually sold by US organisations. The comparison of well types explains when each one makes sense.

Can I pay in instalments, or share a well?

Yes to both. Several customers often share one well for a parent and put all their names on the plaque. Write the names in the order form. For instalments, see the payment options at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a water well cost in Pakistan?

A hand-pump well costs £150 to £300 in 2026 depending on the builder, depth and what is included. Well & Trees builds one for £195 all included: drilling, pump, plaque, GPS, photos and video.

How much does a water well cost in the USA, in dollars?

US organisations charge $200 to $600 for a hand-pump well in Pakistan and $2,500 to $5,000 for a borehole in Africa. Our hand-pump well is $259 all included.

How long does it take to build the well?

About 3 months from your order to the video of the finished well, depending on the geology and the season. You receive an email at each step.

Why is your well £195 when some charities charge £150?

Because we include the plaque, GPS, photos and video, build within about 3 months, use a cast-iron pump, come back for repairs, pay for our advertising openly, and take a margin that we state. A £150 well is often shallower, slower, or without proof.

Does the price include a plaque with a name?

Yes. Every well carries a plaque with the name you choose; it appears in the photos and the video.
