Why Madagascar?

Fewer than half of rural families in Madagascar have access to clean water. Villages are far from towns, the ground is often clay and rock, and no pump is sold within reach. A hand-dug well with a concrete lining and a bucket works without electricity and can be repaired by the village itself. Our team there has built hundreds of these wells; the fruit trees we plant grow in the same villages, so one order can give a village water and food.

Our Protocol for Building a Well 💧

Before any work begins, the team identifies a strategic and accessible location. The choice is based on the presence of a shallow water table and the feasibility of installing a solid concrete structure.

A circular concrete wall is poured or assembled to form the base of the future well. This structural element ensures stability and protects the surrounding area from collapse.

Drilling is carried out inside the enclosure through progressive excavation down to approximately 7 metres. This step allows access to the local water table.

Depth is measured carefully as excavation progresses. The water is tested to ensure it is clear and safe for community use.

Soil and sediment are manually removed throughout the digging process. This keeps the space clear and facilitates progress toward the water table.

Once water is reached, a manual bucket system is installed. This simple and robust mechanism allows families to access water daily without the need for a pump or electricity.

The well is reinforced with a concrete rim around the opening. This finishing touch enhances safety and provides long-term protection of the water from external contamination.

Is a water well sadaqah jariyah? What the hadith says

A classic well is a sadaqah jariyah in the most literal sense: a hand-dug well with a bucket, in a village of Madagascar where there was none, used by up to 500 people every day for years. The Prophet, peace be upon him, listed the ongoing charity among the three deeds that continue after death (Sahih Muslim 1631), and gave water as the example when Sa’d ibn Ubadah asked what to do for his late mother (Abu Dawud 1681).

For £875 you get the well, the concrete rim, the plaque with the names you choose, the GPS coordinates, the photos and the video of the first water. Compare it with the £195 hand-pump well in Pakistan and the other types of water well. Many families order it in memory of a parent, with several names on the plaque. In the same villages we plant fruit trees from £28.
